What is a Kangaroo-a-thon?
The Kangaroo-a-thon is a friendly and fun competition that awards babies who are held the longest, and coaches who are most supportive of the Kangaroo Care method over a period of time.
It recognizes and celebrates babies, parents, and coaches worldwide. Started by the creative staff at USIN as a way to celebrate, share, and engage during International Kangaroo Care Awareness Day (May 15).
A Kangaroo Coach or Trainer creates and manages a team within their own group or hospital unit using the web app. The team leader can join or create a competition (for their own team only, or a multi-team competition). NICUs have been participating in Kangaroo-a-thons for years and now The Zaky app is here to do the math so more teams can participate.
Visit www.kangaroo.care to learn more about Kangaroo Care, Kangaroo Care Awareness Day, and events being held worldwide to celebrate Kangaroo Care.
What is The Zaky® App (Mobile and Web App)?
The Zaky app is designed to expand the practice of Kangaroo Care in hospitals and homes worldwide. You will be an active participant in improving the quality and state of the science for Kangaroo Care.
The Zaky App streamlines the time and effort it takes to do the math to figure out performance (and winners!). Improve accuracy, reduce errors, display real-time data, and increase engagement and satisfaction. No more long days of manual calculations to figure out who was held, for how long, and who the coach was (coach is anyone who helps the kangaroo parent/baby).
Ensure all sessions are logged and let The Zaky App display daily cumulative progress and final outcomes for each team member and each team in a competition.
All coaches log into this web app to join or create a team and join or create a competition.
Parents download The Zaky mobile app, register their baby, and then select COMPETE from the bottom bar to join a team:

What information can I see from The Zaky App?
- In order to compete when there are teams of different sizes, duration is normalized by calculating a team's average baby-held-time; i.e. the duration held of all babies in the team, then divided by the number of babies enrolled, and then divided by the number of competition days. It is important that all babies are logged so they can be counted.
- View each baby's average duration and usage of Kangaroo Care, and ranking of babies within your team (daily and within the dates of a competition).
- Each Kangaroo Coach (a coach is anyone who supports parents and babies) and ranking of session durations where parents select them as the “most supportive” (daily and within the dates of a competition).
- The average baby-held-time (duration per baby per day) for each team, and all teams within their competition (daily and within the dates of a competition).
- The number of babies, number of coaches in your team and in all teams in the competition, and much more!
What about privacy?
To protect everyone’s privacy, only parents can decide to log and share their baby’s held-time sessions with the team on The Zaky mobile app.
Only held-time activity from the parent’s account is shared (no feeding, sleeping, growing, hygiene, agenda, etc.).
Only nicknames (defined by parents and coaches) and city/state/country are shared with other parents and outside a team.
All data is anonymized when shared outside the team, competition or app (see our privacy policies)
Let’s transport babies across the world, have fun, and let The Zaky app support your efforts to make Kangaroo Care and skin-to-skin contact a sustainable practice.
