The Zaky® in the Media

The Zaky® began as a response to a deeply personal and traumatic experience—seeking ways to support Zachary in the NICU.

What started as vital support for premature babies has since evolved to care for babies and small children of all sizes, medical conditions, and developmental stages, around the clock.

Rooted in compassion, safety, and connection, The Zaky® empowers families and healthcare professionals to provide evidence-based care in a gentle, comforting way during life’s most challenging moments.

Zachary's incredible story of survival and our mission have been featured in numerous media outlets, underscoring the essential role of science, nurturing touch, skin-to-skin (kangaroo) care, and developmental support for every child and family.

We invite you to explore our press and media coverage to discover how The Zaky® is making a global impact.

READER'S DIGEST

"Blackout"

by Peter Michelmore
April, 2002

The Reader's Digest article "Blackout" recounts the dramatic evacuation of a Houston NICU during Tropical Storm Allison, which caused severe flooding and a power failure at the hospital. The story focuses on Zachary Jackson, a premature baby reliant on life-support.

As the hospital lost power, Zachary's parents, Yamile and Larry Jackson, along with NICU staff, manually pumped oxygen and used skin-to-skin contact to keep him alive. Amidst the chaos, they helped evacuate 600 patients, including 79 NICU babies.

This story later inspired the movie 14: Hours, where Zachary is portrayed as "baby Jeremy." His journey also led to the creation of The Zaky® and the founding of Nurtured by Design, Inc., ensuring his struggle was not in vain.
