Clean Skin and Hands: All you need to know to keep your baby safe and sound

Giving the skyrocketing cases of infection transmission from parent to newborns as a result of touch and skin to skin contact between parents and infants, there is a need for urgent infection control measures when caring for your newborns, experts say.

And while there is a need for meaningful touch between parents and their babies when caring for their little ones, a hospital in Michigan has found that skin to skin care is the leading cause Staphylococcus aureus among babies. Little wonder why officials there have set up a three-part program designed to reduce those kinds of infections.

According to Gwen Westerling, a leading researcher, and infection prevention expert, while skin to skin care is essential for the development of a baby, the spread of infections through this type of caregiving comes with a lot of risks, hence, the introduction of the three-part program. These three parts include;

  • Increased awareness campaign on the importance of hygiene
  • Compulsory staff education about infectious diseases like Staphylococcus aureus
  • The need for parent to cleanse their skin before contact with their newborn.

Amazingly, having introduced this measure, the hospital recorded only 20 Staphylococcus aureus cases as against the backdrop of 59 cases the previous year.  Their finding was presented at the annual meetings of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), in Minneapolis which held on Thursday. What this result means is that interventions as simple as cleansing your skin before caring for your newborn can drastically reduce infection rates.
